The beatmatching drill that still matters
Sync buttons won. And yet every DJ who learned to match by ear mixes better with sync than one who never did — because the ear training transfers to phrasing, to hearing drift before the crowd does, to trusting yourself when the software is wrong. Ten minutes a day on these decks is the gym membership; the studio console is game day.
Drill structure that works: match B to A by ear, blend for sixteen bars, cut, swap roles. When you can do it three times in a row without the gallop, drop both tempos' starting positions further apart and go again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I practice beatmatching here?
Load both decks, start deck A, then start B and nudge its tempo fader until the kicks stop galloping. The tempo readouts help you get close; your ears do the last 0.5%. That's the whole skill, and it transfers to any gear.
Why is there no sync button?
On purpose — this is the practice toy. Matching by ear builds the skill; the studio console handles sync (and section warping, and key) when you're performing rather than practicing.
Can I use headphone cueing?
Browser toys can't split outputs the way DJ hardware does. Use the crossfader to audition one side quietly, or practice the radio-DJ way: full blends, committed. For true pre-cueing you want the studio console or hardware.
What files work best?
Anything the browser decodes — MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC. Tracks with steady drums make beatmatching practice far more satisfying than rubato ballads, for obvious reasons.
